Biography

Sherry L. Baker

"SHERRY LYNN BAKER was born in Connersville, Indiana in 1957 to Donald & Shirley Hogan Baker. Her father's family came from Booneville, Kentucky to Blooming Grove Indiana. Her grandfather was a Southern Baptist Preacher. Her mother's family came from Lee County Kentucky to the same area and attended church where her grandpa preached. They met and got married, and the rest is history.

What sparked her interest in genealogy was her mother's brother wanting her to write a book on the Hogan family of Lee County Kentucky, plus her Grandma & Grandpa Baker were mighty precious to her. When she started it didn't take long to become addicted to it. And after she found out what her ancestors went through she felt obligated to tell their stories and not to let their memory die. Even when she used to come to Kentucky when she was a little girl she felt an attachment like she belonged there and when she left she became homesick to go back. Owsley County feels like home to her and it is.

Sherry started researching her father's history in Owsley County. After becoming frustrated at not having adequate resources for her research in Owsley County, the president of the Clay County Historical Society suggested that she try to get the "Owsley County Historical Society" formed. That was in November of 2002. She formed a website and took on the task of informing persons interested that she had now formed. By 2004 their were nearly 300 members.

"We have worked very hard in Owsley County by involving our organization in Daniel Boone Days and the county itself, the mission and goal of our organization has been to help promote the beauty of Owsley county and the rich history that it possess."

In November of 2004, the organization split. It was only because of the support of most of the founding members that she was encouraged not to give up. This led to the formation of the Owsley County History and Genealogy Society which has now bloomed into the Three Forks of the Kentucky River Historical Association.

The new family members she has found and the new friends she has made far surpasses anything she has ever felt or experienced in her life. The Lord has truly enriched her life and blessed her with knowing all of you. We are about helping our members with their research and putting families back together that have been apart for a long time.

"My contribution to the History of Owsley County is dedicated to Geneva Taylor and R.B. Baker, my sweet grandparents whom I look forward to seeing again one day, and to the hundreds of families that lived, toiled and died so that my life might be better, they made me who I am. They are the echoes from the past that breathe life into my very soul."

"I have been privileged to have worked with and formed great relationships with my cousins and following researchers who are no longer here:
Leland Porter
Miles Crawford
Jess Wilson
Joyce Wilson
Harley Tucker Bowling
Martha Jo Marcum Carr"

"I am very proud and honored to have been the first president and the founder of the Owsley County Historical Society and the founder and past president of the Owsley County History and Genealogy Society."

"I have 1 son and 2 beautiful grandchildren I have been truly blessed." - Sherry Lynn Baker
