Jacob Gabbard

From the Berea Citizen, April 18, 1900

Owsley County - Jacob Gabbard [s/o Henry Gabbard Sr. and Barbara Hunsucker], the oldest man in this vicinity died Saturday night [April 14, 1900]. He was in his eighty seventh year, being born in Washington county, Virginia on August 22, 1813. He was one of the first settlers of this neighborhood and always recommended as one of the best citizens, being kind to everyone he might meet.

The deceased was married to Miss Elizabeth Wood [on Mar 22, 1844, Clay County, KY.], who died July 14th 1893. He had been ill only about two weeks before the Lord came and relieved him of his suffering, though he was always ready to go whenever he might be called. He leaves five children [Henry Clay, William Bentley, Margaret "Sis", John Livingston, and Rebecca Jane] a large number of grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn his loss. The body was laid to rest in the family graveyard in the area where he lived the most of his life.
