Moss Gabbard

Moss Gabbard of Gray Hawk, was born October 28, 1906, in Jackson County and departed this life on Sunday, August 15, 2004 at the age of 97. He was the son of William (Billy) Gabbard and Rachel (Marcum) Gabbard. Moss was married to Delta Lee Cook on December 22, 1927. This marriage endured for 72 years until Delta's death on March 9, 1999. Five children came from this union; 4 are still living.

A lifelong resident of Jackson County, Moss earned a living as a Merchant, a Farmer, and a Trader in livestock, produce and real estate. He worked several years for the Jackson County RECC (now Jackson Energy). Moss was a member of the Board of Directors of the Jackson County Bank from 1954 to 1996.

Moss is survived by four children - Arkie Gabbard of Hamilton, Ohio; Ova Gene Gabbard of Cary, North Carolina; Violet Kostun of Gray Hawk; and Fletcher Gabbard of McKee. Moss was blessed with 12 grandchildren, 18 great - grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Moss was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Delta Cook Gabbard, a son - Clyde L. Gabbard and all of his brothers and sisters - Farris Gabbard, Maude Tillery, Luda Jones, Ernest L. Gabbard, Edgar Gabbard, Everett Gabbard, and Leonard Gabbard.

Moss was a member of the Gray Hawk Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 18, 2004 at the Lakes Funeral Home Chapel in McKee, with Rev Ellis Abner and Rev Fountain Jones officiating. Burial followed in the T.M. Lakes Cemetery in Sand Gap. Lakes Funeral Home, Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers: Grandsons: David S. Gabbard, Tom Gabbard, Larry G. Gabbard, Fletcher W. Gabbard, Gregory S. Gabbard, Jack Hays, Jr., and Nephew Tony Gabbard.

Honorary Pallbearers: Delbert Marcum, Jim H. Hays, R. Bruce Hays, Wiley Cole, Woodrow Masters, Ty Brumback, Earl Coffee, George Kostun, Kenneth Shepherd, William O. Smith, Ralph Marcum, and Travis Sparks.

I got this from my cousin Fletcher Gabbard a dear sweet man who is gone to heaven.
