GABBARD FAMILY CEMETERY

UPPER BUFFALO CREEK

Submitted by Betty Bowman Gabbard

Located at the mouth of Upper Buffalo on the South Fork of the Kentucky River.

“Family Legend says that the cemetery was started by Jackson and Martha Gabbard at the death of their young daughters, Laura and Susan, during a typhoid epidemic.  There were three hickory trees at the site of the present cemetery.  The family lived on the Clay County side of the river (South Fork of the Kentucky River).  During the time Laura and Susan were ill, doves could be seen flying from the house where they lived to light on the hickory trees.  When the girls died the family attached significance to this and buried them under the hickory trees.” This is on the Owsley side of the river.
