Rock House – Couch Cemetery
Owsley County, KY
Submitted by Marion Couch
Take Hwy 28 out of Booneville, towards Buckhorn. Take a right on 2024. When it ends at Bee Branch Church, take a right towards Mistletoe. After going past the Mistletoe Church (Old Post Office), The road becomes passable only with a four-wheel drive or ATV. Go several miles until passing a gas well on the right. Take the first little road left.
Cemetery is about half a mile out this road. Walk down hill past huge rocks. Cemetery is at the point of the ridge. According to AB Couch, the caskets were taken to the cemetery on sleds, pulled by horses. Al Baker, age 80, said when he was a young boy, he attended church services there. It was an “open church” which consisted of several rows of wooden benches.
Marion Couch of Cherokee, AL, visited this cemetery in May of 2005, and with the help of Al Baker and AB Couch, made a list of persons buried there. Marion is making new stones for some of the graves, and plans to place them there the fall of 2005.
Fourteen graves, marked mostly with rocks.
